Stream it a little early: Mudcrutch – 2

Tom Petty led a Florida garage band called Mudcrutch in the early 70s, and the crew even moved to California in an attempt to finally “make it.” It never worked out, though, and Petty eventually took guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench with him to start Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Mudcrutch was not done forever, though! Petty got the original band back together in 2008, releasing a full album and even hitting the road, and now Petty, Campbell, Tench, Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh are all back together for a new album with creatively title: 2.

The album officially comes out on Friday, May 20, but for a limited time, you can stream the full thing via NPR.

As a lifetime Petty fan, 2 is sweet music to my ears. I dig the more relaxed, optimistic vibe compared to the last actual Petty and the Heartbreakers album, Hypnotic Eye.

And here are the three songs already uploaded to Spotify, in case you read this and the NPR stream has already been removed …
