Indie r&b maestro Blood Orange surprised the music world earlier this week when he dropped his new album, Freetown Sound, a few days ahead of schedule.
Freetown Sound is the follow up to 2013’s phenomenal Cupid Deluxe, and after my first few listens, I’m ready to say that Blood Orange has one again knocked it out of the park. This is a dense album, with Mr. Orange (OK, his real name is Devonté Hynes) once again filling song after song with tight drum patterns, 80s-inspired synth lines, thoughtful lyrics, and powerful hooks. He brings in a ton of guest stars as well, sticking primarily with female vocalists as usual.
I haven’t soaked this album in enough to write any sort of official review, but “Augustine,” “E.V.P.,” and “Better Than Me” stand out as early favorites. The whole thing sounds great, though, and I highly recommend giving it a listen. There have been three Blood Orange albums so far, and each one is a deeply rewarding listen jam-packed with emotion.
