News broke today that a new Pixies album, Head Carrier, was coming this September. The band also released the first song from that album, “Um Chagga Lagga.”
I worship at the altar of the Pixies’ first four albums as much as anyone, and seeing them play Austin City Limits when they first reunited was one of the better concert experiences I’ve ever had, but 2014’s Indie Cindy was a bit of a nightmare. Does this new track show any signs of improvement?
Well … kind of? Maybe a little bit?
“Um Chagga Lagga” is fast, messy, and raw. It chagga laggas along for exactly three minutes, with Joey Santiago’s guitar work standing out just as it did for much of Indie Cindy. I could see this track working well in the flow of a full album, but on its own, the most positive thing I can honestly say about “Um Chagga Lagga” is that it’s not bad.
But listen below for yourself! Maybe I’m just a grumpy jerk. I do still love these guys, and I wish them all the best. I promise!
