William Onyeabor, world music pioneer, dead at 70

William Onyeabor, the Nigerian musician who released several groundbreaking funk albums in the 70s and 80s before completely walking become away from the music industry, died at his home earlier this week.

The record label Luaka Bop announced Onyeabor’s death via Facebook. Onyeabor was largely unknown in America before Luaka Bop released a large compilation of his work, World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who is William Onyeabor?, in 2013. It really is a tremendous compilation, and I’m thankful that it introduced the man’s music to me a few years ago. Since I first heard it, I’ve loved sharing Onyeabor’s synth-heavy, funky music with people to see what they think.
